Play console games with emulator

The greatest digital entertainment is GAME. We already have a post about simple-but-fun game, ToyRoom 3D, now we will discuss a little about playing console game. A console game is a form of interactive multimedia used for entertainment. The game consists of manipulable images (and usually sounds) generated by a video game console, and displayed on a television or similar audio-video system. The game itself is usually controlled and manipulated using a handheld device connected to the console called a controller. The controller generally contains a number of buttons and directional controls (such as analog joysticks) each of which has been assigned a purpose for interacting with and controlling the images on the screen. The display, speakers, console, and controls of a console can also be incorporated into one small object known as a handheld game console.

How can we play console games in our PC? The answer is EMULATOR. An emulator in computer sciences duplicates (provides an emulation of) the functions of one system using a different system, so that the second system behaves like (and appears to be) the first system. This focus on exact reproduction of external behavior is in contrast to some other forms of computer simulation, which can concern an abstract model of the system being simulated.

There are many emulators for computer, even for DOS emulator. If you have trouble in playing old DOS games in Windows XP, try DOSBox. DOSBox is a DOS-emulator that uses the SDL-library which makes DOSBox very easy to port to different platforms. I usually use DOSBox to play DOS games. Why DOS games? Just to remember my childhood. :D


DOSBox also emulates CPU:286/386 realmode/protected mode, Directory FileSystem/XMS/EMS, Tandy/Hercules/CGA/EGA/VGA/VESA graphics, a SoundBlaster/Gravis Ultra Sound card for excellent sound compatibility with older games. You can "re-live" the good old days with the help of DOSBox, it can run plenty of the old classics that don't run on your new computer! DOSBox is totally free of charge and OpenSource. 

Need for Speed: Underground 2Now back to our topic, console games in PC. Yes, you can play PS2 or XBOX games in PC... How? Just use emulators. You can use Click-2U PS2 Emulator for playing PS2 games, or Click-2U XBOX Emulator for playing XBOX games.

Here are some great games for PS2: Namco Museum 50th Anniversary, Cars, Lego Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy or Sonic Mega Collection. There are some issue about legality of video games emulator, especially in US. As computers and global computer networks continued to advance and emulator developers grew more skilled in their work, the length of time between the commercial release of a console and its successful emulation began to shrink. Fifth generation consoles such as the Nintendo 64, the Sony PlayStation and sixth generation handhelds, such as the Game Boy Advance, saw significant progress toward emulation during their production. This has led to a more concerted effort by console manufacturers to crack down on unofficial emulation. Both country specific copyright and patent law and international copyright law under the Berne Convention protect copying and reproducing of subject matter with copyright protection.

Under United States law, obtaining a dumped copy of the original machine's BIOS is legal under the ruling Lewis Galoob Toys, Inc. v. Nintendo of America, Inc., 964 F.2d 965 (9th Cir. 1992) as fair use as long as the user obtained a legally purchased copy of the machine. However, several emulators for platforms such as Game Boy Advance are capable of running without a BIOS file, using high-level emulation to simulate BIOS subroutines at a slight cost in emulation accuracy.
