[Article] And the ".XXX" finally approved

If you are a web designer, we have some tips for you. If you are an owner of an adult website, we have a good news for you.

ICANN Board Approves Dot-XXX Top-level Domain for Porn

Yes, the pornography industry now has its own top domain. It's not only a good news for the industry but also for the parents, it will be much easier to identify a porn site on parental control software. The name is inspired by the former MPAA and BBFC "X" rating, now commonly applied to pornographic movies as "XXX". ICANN (Internet Corporation of Assigned Names and Numbers) announced in June 1, 2005 a preliminary approval of .xxx as an sTLD similar to .aero, .travel, etc., but on May 10, 2006, it reversed the approval, and on March 30, 2007, the ICANN board rejected the .xxx proposal, the third time since the .xxx domain had been first suggested. The decision was appealed by ICM Registry, who on April 26, 2010, sent out an email noting that they had won their appeal with ICANN and, "are expecting to be able to begin actual registrations sometime later this year." The ICANN board finally approved the proposal in June 2010.

ICANN which is responsible for overseeing the creation and distribution of web addresses, finally gave the go-ahead for the special .xxx domain name at a meeting in Brussels. The adult entertainment industry has long campaigned in favour of a special .xxx suffix, similar to the .com and .co.uk domain names used by other companies.

According to Internet Pornography Statistics, which measures adult entertainment web traffic, more than $3,000 is spent on internet pornography every second, while “sex” is the number one search term in the world, accounting for a quarter of all internet searches.
